Louise Distras comments on the Pussy Riot verdict…

The vast majority of you will now be aware of the Court result following the trial of Pussy Riot in Moscow; we have been covering the story from the actual gig right through to the trial and the final verdict; we even had a LTW writer present in the Court room – read her comments here.

The mainstream artists are now queuing up to add their support, and arguably at the same time keeping their own profiles raised – when you are as big as McCartney and Madonna surely you can do more than daub the Pussy Riot name on your back – pressure your label not to sell your records in Russia, refuse to tour in the country etc etc – but that is for another debate.

In the meantime one of our favourite artists Louise Distras has blogged about the case from the begining and has now commented upon the verdict, please read her views then re-post, re- tweet etc:

There are some people out there who don’t care about Pussy Riot, and they think that everything that’s happening right now doesn’t apply to them.Well, I believe that it applies to every single one of us, and here’s why I believe that we are all Pussy Riot.Pussy Riot is the single Mum.

Pussy Riot is the single Dad.

Pussy Riot is the little girl that gets bullied at school, who gets called an ‘ugly dyke’ for being more interested in books than in boys and Barbie dolls.

Pussy Riot is every little boy that gets told to ‘man up’, because he’s ‘such a girl’ when he shows feelings.

Pussy Riot is same the little boy who then grows into a man that is scared to cry as he watches his family suffer, because society tells us that ‘real men’ are ‘macho’.

Pussy Riot is every woman who has been told she’s ‘dumb’,’over reacting’ or ‘PMSing’ when she expresses an opinion that colours outside of the lines of what she is told to think or feel.

Pussy Riot is every woman who has been grabbed, violated, attacked and harassed in the street for no reason other than the fact she is female.

Pussy Riot is every woman that goes to prison for defending herself against her attacker.

Pussy Riot is every woman who has to work ten times harder to be taken seriously, because it is rammed down our throats that how we look is more important than what we say and do.

Pussy Riot is Emily Davison, the suffragette that stepped in front of a racehorse and DIED so that us WOMEN could have the RIGHT TO VOTE.

Pussy Riot is Irena Sendler, the Polish Catholic social worker who smuggled 2,500 Jewish babies and children out of the Warsaw ghetto during World War II, despite being tortured and imprisoned by the Nazis.

Pussy Riot is the ‘Scots Scarlet Pimpernel’ Ethel MacDonald who fought for a womans right to WORK and receive equal pay, and assisted the escape of anarchists who were wanted by the communist secret police during the Spanish Civil War.

Pussy Riot is Rosa Parks, the African-Amercian Civil Rights activist who sparked a civil rights movement and became an international icon of resistance to racial segregation when
she refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white passenger, after the white passenger section was filled.

Pussy Riot is the pro-choice activists who fight for our right to have BIRTH CONTROL.

Pussy Riot is three incredibly brave women, wives and mothers who are facing three years in prison ‘on the grounds of hooliganism and religious hatred’ for simply speaking
their mind and fighting for our freedom.

PUSSY RIOT IS THE WOMEN WHO HAVE FOUGHT AND DIED FOR ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU NOW TAKE FOR GRANTED.

Pussy Riot is every lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender human being of all race, class, ability /’disability’ that walks in shadows, living in fear, and facing prejudice every single day because they are ‘different’.

Pussy Riot is every same sex couple that receives life in prison or even faces the death penalty
just for being in love.

Pussy Riot is everyone who fights for the right to have same sex unions and marriage legally recognised, and for same sex couples to have the right to have children.

Pussy Riot is every victim and survivor of a hate crime.

Pussy Riot is the voice of the oppressed and exploited in the name of profit and corporate greed.
Pussy riot is the voice of the vulnerable who are bullied for cheap laughs,

Pussy Riot is the human being that has hit rock bottom, that has found the bravery, courage and strength to put themself back together again.

Pussy Riot is the human being that refuses to be somebody elses property, and lives their life by their own terms.

Pussy Riot is me.
You.
Your Mum.
Your sister.
Your Grandmother.
Your friend.
The teacher who inspires you.
The woman who cleans your house.
The woman who serves you lunch in the canteen at work,
The woman who drives your bus home.
The woman who looks after your kids, whilst you go out and exercise your human right to earn a living and provide
for your family.
Need I go on?

 WE ARE ALL PUSSY RIOT.

The battle that Pussy Riot is fighting, whether we like it or not, is a battle that we are all fighting together.I believe that all prejudices and ‘isms’, stem from sexism. This is because, everything…and I mean everything, is ruled by the white-corporate-macho-male because they’re the ones that make all the decisions that affect us which means that sexism is an underlying issue that affects every single person, from every single walk of life.Tomorrow, on Pussy Riot International Solidarity Day; I am inviting you to join me in showing your solidarity and support for these three incrediblybrave women, wives and mothers who are fighting for my freedom and fighting for your freedom.Seek out the nearest protest in your city, take it to the streets, dress up, wear balaclavas, make banners, make videos like this, post messages on Facebook/Twitter, sign the petition at www.amnesty.org.uk…it doesn’t matter what you do as long as you do something.Pussy Riot are going to be sentenced tomorrow, and it’s important that we all wake up tomorrow morning, knowing that we did everything we could to stop these three amazing women from going to jail.It is our duty (especially within the punk rock community) to re-unite Maria, Yekaterina, and Nadezhda with their children, husbands, friends and family –

  1. whilst i totally abhor what has happened to pussy riot i’m not sure that i agree with Louise’s politically correct agenda. I am a pretty ‘ordinary’ chap and i must admit now that i’m in middle age i do have some fairly conservative views. I think it was a really good point made elsewhere re the likes of McCartney/Madonna, these mega-wealthy superstars should boycott Russia and refuse their ‘product’ being sold there. Perhaps i’m being a tad sceptical but somehow i doubt they will as i believe that their ‘opposition’ to what has happened is entirely tokenistic, in my opinion both McCartney and Madonna are mega arseholes who only care about money/themselves but like to promote a ‘radical’ image when it suits.

    • Isn’t just Madonna or Paul McCartney jumping on the band though is it? I’d never heard of Louise Distrast until this post, so she could also be accused of raising her profile too. The most disturbing thing to me is that these women have kids and they must have known (being Russian) that the authorities would act this way. As a mother myself I don’t consider it brave at all to do something that would risk you being taken from your kids – rather selfish and irresponsible. The thought that this may also be an extreme marketing campaign to raise their own profile, become famous and sell more music is also bothering me – I feel sorry for their children.

      • there is plenty of footage online on European TV of Nadias daughter being cared for by her father and no doubt extended family/friends. Ok she probably misses her mum but she’ll be looked after in the same way as a lot of lone parents look after their kids, with the help of family. The whole point of what Pussy Riot are doing is for the benefit of their children …. read their closing statements. Extreme marketing campaign???!!! You are joking aren’t you. Pussy Riot are not really a “punk band” they are performance artists / political activists -something that the mainstream media don’t seem to understand.

Don’t know why I’m bothering to reply to you really as you don’t know what you’re talking about. if you had any interest in punk culture you’d know who Louise Distras was, and she’s certainly not a bandwagon jumper. But if you’d said Billy Bragg, I might have agreed,,,
