Louder Than War Premiere: Dubwiser Dancehall’s Eye Popper (featuing Spider J)Louder Than War premiere a new track by Dubwiser Dancehall, a new project by some of the guys behind Dubwiser. Titled Eye Popper it features Spider J.

Back in October 2011 you may remember we reviewed an album by a band called Dubwiser, a long time fixture on the ever prolific Oxford music scene. Dubwiser though always stood apart from those other Oxford bands (such as Radiohead, Ride, Supergrass, Foals, Swervedriver, Talulah Gosh etc) because they weren’t fey indie kids. What they were was a band who played, to quote from our own review, “a brain melting, high energy mixture of dub, roots, soul, dancehall, ska and pop” & were fronted by “a dreadlocked front man Jonas Torrance (who) leaps around stages like his life depended on it”!

One & a half years later & Dubwiser are once again back in Louder Than War’s pages as we premiere an offshoot of the band’s new single. The “offshoot” goes by the name Dubwiser Dancehall & is based around the production and songwriting talents of the afore-mentioned Jonas Torrance and Spider J.

Spider J, who does vocals on one track of the EP (the one we’re premiering) has quite some pedigree judging by the accompanying press release. “In the 80s he earned his stripes as a musician in seminal UK pop / ska bands Madness and Bad Manners” and “… his credits also include the first ever Jungle number one ‘Original Nutter’ By UK Apache.” On top of that he’s also “produced and written for the likes of Kano and Estelle in recent times.”

Proving the band’s pedigree beyond any question of doubt, Dubwiser Dancehall also has connections with seminal masters of the dub & reggae scene having either supported or helped write for / produce Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Mad Professor, Horace Andy and Aswad!

This EP is the first in a series of releases and apart from Spider J also features the talents of Scrutineer, EB & Burnt Brasse.

And so to the track that we’re privileged to be able to premiere for you. The track’s called “Eye Popper” & it’s a typically vibrant & bouncing piece of music, heavy on effects & echo with the title referring to the effect heavy bass can have on ones eyes – “make yer eye go pop right out of it’s socket”. Clocking in at a meagre 3.25 it definitely leaves you wanting much, much more – so we’re lucky there are another 3 tracks on the EP!

The EP’s released digitally on the 29th July 2013. To keep up with the band’s movements we suggest you visit the Dubwiser website or follow them on Facebook & Twitter.

Guy is a former full time member of the Louder Than War editorial team, who's since moved on to pastures new. Music's been a large part of his life since he first stumbled across Peel on his tranny as a fifteen year old. His whole approach to music was learnt from Peel in fact, which includes having as inclusive a taste in music as possible. Guy devotes most of his time looking for new music & although he's been known to say "the only good music is new music" he pretty much accepts this is bollocks. Favourite band The Minutemen.
