Another intriguing piece of work from The Long Lost Band and Larry Beckett, the author / writer, this time on a bonafide classic.

The Long Lost Band and Larry Beckett have been working together since 2013. In 2015 they released a collaborative album called ‘One More Mile’(LTW review here), which along with a stream of new and original songs, included new music to a song Larry and Tim Buckley never got to finish, called ‘On The Hook’.  Taking another song, perhaps the most famous of Beckett’s  legacy, they do a rather splendid and unique reworking of what over the years has become a standard cover for anyone who is anyone.

‘Song To The Siren’ was written by Tim Buckley and Larry Beckett in 1967 and Tim first performed it on The Monkees show in 1968. He later included the song on his ground-breaking album ‘Starsailor’ in 1970. The song has been covered many times since then by a catalogue of stars including Robert Plant, Bryan Ferry, Sinead O’Connor, Elizabeth Fraser, and George Michael, to name just a few.

Now in 2016, a new and very unique version has been made with Larry Beckett himself present on the recording, telling in spoken word, the moving story of how the song came to be composed. Larry’s account is woven into a complete musical performance of ‘Song To The Siren’ by Larry’s musical collaborators The Long Lost Band from Lancaster, UK.  The LLB also add their own version of the song on the EP together with another Beckett co-write on ‘Synchronicity’. The latter an entirely different version of  ‘Synchronicity’ on ‘One More Mile’. Same lyrics but a new tune was written by Larry’s wife Laura Fletcher, and arranged and recorded by The Long Lost Band.

‘Song To The Siren’ will be released on a limited CD version via Bandcamp, and will be available to download from itunes, Spotify & Amazon.

  1. That is the most beautiful version of this that can stand with The Tim Buckley performance on the Monkees show! To hear this story told made me tremble, cigarette shaking in my mouth like a homeless man trying to keep warm in a deep freeze all alone, and the tears fell from my eyes without restraint…
