Legendary sax player Lol Coxhill has sadly passed away.
I always loved his free jazz sax work on the Damned’s second album and was one of the leading lights of a generation of experimental musicians and ÃÂ a John Peel fave.
nicked the bit below from Wikipedia because his career was far too varied to write out again…
Coxhill was born atÃÂ Portsmouth,ÃÂ Hampshire, UK. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was a member ofÃÂ Carol Grimes and Delivery[2]ÃÂ and thenÃÂ Kevin Ayers and the Whole World.[3]
He became known for his solo playing and for work in duets with pianist Steve Miller[4][5]ÃÂ and guitarist G. F. Fitzgerald.
Coxhill collaborated with other musicians includingÃÂ Mike Oldfield,ÃÂ Morgan FisherÃÂ (ofÃÂ Mott the Hoople),Chris McGregor‘sÃÂ Brotherhood of Breath,ÃÂ The Dedication Orchestra,ÃÂ Django Bates,ÃÂ The Damned,ÃÂ Hugh Metcalfe,ÃÂ Derek BaileyÃÂ andÃÂ performance artÃÂ groupÃÂ Welfare State.
