Leona Lewis to cover Nine Inch Nails track ‘Hurt’

2006’s X- Factor winner Leona Lewis is set to cover the Nine Inch Nails’ 1994 track ‘Hurt’ on her forthcoming EP; the track first appearred upon NIN’s album ”ËœThe Downward Spiral’

Lewis will feature the song on ‘Hurt: The EP’ (Sony Music) which is set for release on the 9th December 2011.

Perhaps a surprising choice of cover version for Simon Cowells pop starlet; The true meaning of “Hurt” is disputed; it has been suggested that the song acts like a suicide letter with notes on depression, another suggestion being that it describes a suicidal person finding a reason to live. Trent Reznor himself has never fully clarified the meaning of the track, though the album explored themes including the differences between society and self-harm. NIN released a (rarely seen) video for the track which included visuals, such as war atrocities, a nuclear bomb test, survivors of the Battle of Stalingrad, a snake staring at the camera, and a time-lapse film of a fox decomposing in reverse, which were projected to add visual symbolism (depicting various images of death, destruction and loss) to the song’s subject matter.

I guess the Leona Lewis promo won’t!!

Lewis’ EP will also contain covers of ‘Iris’ by the Goo Goo Dolls and ‘Colorblind’ by Counting Crows.

Originally set for release in November, Lewis’ third album ‘Glassheart’, will now be released on March 26, 2012

Am I just being cynical? Did Lewis herself actually select the song, or was it the choice of a faceless stylist carefully selected, based on the fact that Reznor has recently completed the soundtrack to the hugely successful film ”ËœThe Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ and is due to receive both international publicity and critical plaudits – not like Simon Cowell to steal anothers limelight is it?

Phil Newall is 47, from The Wirral - he earns his living not writing about music nor playing music...though sorely wishes he could. He was fortunate enough to see many of the first generation punk bands when they played the U18's matinee shows at Eric's, Liverpool. As an attendee at Eric's he was exposed to punk rock, dub reggae, art rock, and all manner of weirdness; as a customer at Probe Records he was variously served and scowled at by Pete Wylie and Pete Burns - he has written for Record Collector, Whisperin & Hollerin, and Spiral Scratch and wanted to write a book detailing the Liverpool punk scene; however with 'Head-On' Julian Cope beat him to it...and frankly did a much better job.

  1. Most likely chosen by someone that heard the Johnny Cash version, my main question is why Trent Reznor would allow this to be released?

  2. I’m not normally fussy about people covering songs, but this I foresee being roughly the same level of musical reward as Mariah Carey covering Born in the USA…

  3. It really doesn’t matter. Johnny Cash’s version will never be surpassed. He had more character, passion, empathy, grit, experience, understanding and talent in his left nostril than Lewis will ever have!

  4. what I call ‘bad taste’ here is to cover a song, already covered by a legendary musician, that is not amongst the living ones anymore; on another hand everyone has the right to do whatever they want – we all know it won’t be better…

  5. Why is it OK for Johnny Cash to cover Hurt, but not Leona Lewis? Cash recorded the song at the behest of his producer (Rick Rubin) – is this not the same thing she’s being condemned for? Reznor thought the idea of Cash covering it ‘gimmicky’ – and was proved entirely wrong when he heard it. Why not reserve judgment until you’ve heard her version?
