Bad Brains documentary film- watch the trailerA few months ago we reported that the legendary bad brains guitar player, Dr. Know, was in hospital on life support. He is clinging onto life at the moment and now it seems that the band’s charismatic frontman HR has been diagnosed with a rare neurobiological disorder known as ‘SUNCT,’which causes really crippling headaches from out of the blue.

Typically in the land of the free there is also the problem of paying the hospital bills – every American musician who gets ill has to to go through this funding which makes you appreciate what’s left of our NHS and wonder why people are so against such a system in the USA.

There is a GoFundMe that needs to raise $30,000 to help cover a trip to a headache centre not covered by Hudson’s health insurance insurance.

H.R. joined the group’s guitarist, Dr. Know, in asking for help with medical bills after doctors diagnosed the 60-year-old singer with “Short-lasting, Unilateral, Neuralgiform headache attacks with Conjunctival injection and Tearing” or SUNCT, HR’s wife Lori said on a GoFundMe page.

“People tell me all of the time what a positive influence Bad Brains’ music had on their lives,” she said. “It is difficult to see both of these men going through health challenges, but I promise that your kind words, your donations, and your support make a huge difference.”

In an accompanying statement, Lori wrote: “There is no known cure and no reliable medical treatment. To give you an idea of what he’s dealing with, cluster headaches are nicknamed ‘Suicide Syndrome.’”

“The headaches come randomly, with no warning, at all hours of the day and night; but for him, they are much worse at night. The intensity of the nighttime headaches is so great that he yells, cries out, groans, and sobs — repeatedly, every few minutes, for most of the night.

“He can’t work. He has no quality of life. If you call him and ask how he is, he will say, ‘Everything’s okay,’ because that’s just how he is. But everything is not okay.”
