Latest Stone Roses rumours...we check them out

The press conference is today so everything will come out then but the latest Stone Roses rumours are rife… I’ve listed them here, let’s see which ones come out in the wash.

1. The two big gigs that are being talked about are headlining The Leeds and Reading festival…

This seems odd to me, of course it’s an easy gig and the crowd is already in the house, but do the band have to worry about this? Also there is talk of new songs which means a new album, which surely means some sort of tour. Also surely something a bit more home town would make more sense – although there is still talk of that…

2. It will be one or two gigs at Heaton Park…
Feasible, a big early summer show, a statement of intent would make sense… the only curveball here is that the band became famous for the off the wall gigs, but with a modern manager would they risk a Spike Island?
Verdict…almost certain to be 2 gigs at Heaton Park in Manchester

3. There are new songs and a new album…
Almost certain. An insider says the songs are written and an album will be coming out.
Verdict… This will happen.

4. Is Reni doing the gig?
That cryptic message, ‘not before 9t will i wear the hat 4 the Roses’ that we were sent by Reni could have read either way. The insiders I spoke to were trying to keep a straight face. Everyone knows that to see Reni play drums again would be great.
Verdict… Reni will play.

5. It’s a few gigs,and then out again.
Hard to call at this stage but if there is a new album, surely there is a world tour? The Roses were on the verge of cracking America with ‘Second Coming’,
Verdict… there is no information on this but it would make sense to tour.

6. What are Primal Scream going to do?
The greatest free transfer in rock n roll history has gone back home… is it a loan? Or permanent? Of course there will be no bad feelings, these band’s are fellow travelers with much mutual expect…

7. What do the new songs sound like?
This can only be pure speculation, everyone knows the Roses lost moment was the Folsom Gold period when the second album should have been made, leaving the ‘Second Coming’ as the third album… I guess they can’t go back there and the post Roses careers are so diverse that there few clues there as well. So it’s guess time… that rhythm section is so fluid that it must be utilized and it would be great to hear some of those famous crystalline melodies. Ian’s voice sounds fantastically lived in these days, be good to hear that as well and don’t forget Renis backing vocals…
Verdict… classic melodies and less guitars than the second album, some amazing rhythm section stuff going on and some very northern singing… not so much innovation but classic.

  5. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

  6. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
