Kern Vol. 2: DJ Hell (Tresor Records)
Out July 15th 2013
Hell opens proceedings with the groove techno of “Movements 1-4” by Odori, a gorgeously subtle track with many hidden layers, and an excellent choice of an opener that sets the feel and tone for what is to follow.
The mix gradually gets deeper and deeper with the incredible Dan Diamond track “Club Therapy (Peace Division Unreleased Mix)” and Dark Comedy’s “War Of The World (Epic Mix)” introducing a low-house feel whilst adding a subtle swing to proceedings. You can feel Hell getting warmed up and working for a crowd.
The pace is relentless yet euphoric and as ‘old-school’ acid house and trance vibes are introduced via “Overdose” by Major Problems (a very rare track) and “DRGN” by Recondite, the mix invokes a blend of feelings ranging from nostalgia to triumph.
Hell’s mix is all so geared towards the dance floor that it should come with some chewing gum and a tub of Vicks VapoRub (any confused young readers just ask your parents).
The best thing about these Kern mixes is that not only do they have the big-name mix, but also include rarities and unreleased tracks separately. This is where the true gold lies and where most electronica fans will go to first, and DJ Hell does not disappoint.
On the rarities side of things, Sub-Culture’s “Dreams (Tribal Life Mix)” really stands out; a truly great slice of funky house that swings and sways underneath a glorious vocal.
In regards to the exclusives, all three tracks have great moments (Jonas Kopp – “X”, Capracara – “Flashback ’86 (DJ Hell 2013 Rework)” and Halogen – “Bliss (DJ Hell 2013 Rework)”), but it is “Flashback ’86” that creates the most joy (and also closes the set).
DJ Hell has been a DJ since the late 70’s and wanted this mix to be an audio autobiography. In this aim he has succeeded. There is a fantastic blend of old and new on display here, and Kern Vol. 2 shows that the folks at Tresor are not messing about. They are selecting fine DJs to represent themselves and the electronica community in general.
THE SUMMER HAS LANDED!
