We are sad to hear of the death at 62 of John Macbeath, The man they called The Beast’- for all the best possible reasons, was a true Manchester music legend. He was buried today in Altrincham.

John was the amiable gentle giant who was a tour rep of choice for Echo And The Bunnymen and many other bands and worked for SJM. He was a big presence on the scene since his days of turning the Manchester Roadhouse into a venue.

There are so many great stories about him that he genuinely qualified for that much over used word legend. Every band over John and many would not tour unless his prescence was in the room.

He turned the Roadhouse in Manchester from a forgotten dive into one of the key touring venues in the UK before becoming a tour rep with SJM.

Popular with the bands and a face around town he will be sadly missed.

  1. This is very sad news. I first met John when he took over The Roadhouse , i was in gigging Mcr bands and John was one of the only promoters from a ‘ proper ‘ music venues that would put us on. Over the years we ran into each other on different jobs , the last time being last year when he was production manager on the Madness ( band ) tour where JGB were supporting. He always funny and chipper , but would take no lip from anybody….a sad loss. R.I.P

    • I too a few times had the pleasure of working with John,
He was an amazing guy, I was very young in Music at this time and looked up to all the greats that surrounded me.
John was a man who truly understood music and was in it for the love of music too. A lot of firms I worked for over the years sole focus was on the monsy aspect but with John the money was nice but not the most important thing. A funny story was on Skin’s tour the venue refused to take a £5 scottish note which john had sent me to the bar to grab him a drink (we all had scottish money at the time as we had been in edinborough the night before). I walked back up to production and told john of the outcome of my travels to the bar. Johns responce….. He grabbed his coat briskfully walked down to the bar himself and pulled out a £100 scottish note and made them accept the currency (funny as hell at the time) Great Memorys….. Very Sadly Missed!!

  2. I knew of John for many yearsthrough my job as a truck driver, but only started to get to know him better this year whilst out with Katherine Jenkins. My loss is that I didn’t know him better – a truely nice Man

  3. I worked with John on numerous occasions over the years in venues across the country. He was a pleasure to work with and will be greatly missed. Genuine people like John are few and far between.

  4. John was a great bloke.

First met him when he had The Castle and loved it when he opened the Roadhouse. It became a second home and was an antidote to the harsh ‘pay to play’ venues that were making band’s lives hard at the time.

He was generous, warm and genuine. He always loved the music, the bands and looked after me during my failed attempts at promoting.

I’ve not seen him for years but I’ll never forget him. Like I say, he was a great bloke.

    RIP John.
