John-Cooper-Clarke-Aberdeen-May-2013-by-Dod-Morrison-photography-095Mooted last year and finally seeing fruition is this fascinating project between John Cooper Clarke – the king of the beats and the Salford bard and former Strangler and all round genius, Mr. Hugh Cornwell.

This Time It’s Personal will see the pair record fresh versions of classic songs, including Johnny Remember Me, Spanish Harlem and MacArthur Park. It will be released later this year.

The pair of them have recorded and album of standards which makes sense when you consider that behind all that punk fury Hugh always was a dab hand at the jazzy flourish and the Cooper Clarke has always been a fan of the Sinatra suit and singing style and also the golden seam of pre Beatles pop.

Indeed we were lucky enough, one night a couple of years ago, in Belfast to see Johnny Clarke get up on stage with a random couple of musicians and deliver a killer set of swing standards in a surprisingly great voice – the album will be out in December and there could be gigs in support…
