Incubate festival in Holland on Sept 10/16th

The Incubate Festival in Tilburg in Holland from Sept 10th to 16th is perhaps the best underground music festival in Europe.

For a start it’s indoors, in a clutch of venues and halls in the small Dutch city of Tilburg- so you won’t get muddy and wet and be able to watch loads of great music.

It’s also got a great line up…with some big names in underground music from British Sea Power to Laibach to Buzzcocks to Mogwai to the Membranes to Fields Of The Nephilim…

There’s so much on that we have done our own guide to what you should be seeing here…

During the week (Monday 10-Thursday 13)

On Monday 10th: take in Dutch noiseniks Dead Neanderthals (Stage01 @ 013 – 20:15 – 20:45), follow that immediately by checking out NL’s sludge heroes Dr Doom(Kleine Zaal @ 013 -20:45 – 21:45) and get your ears truly ringing by capping the night off with Napalm Death (Kleine Zaal @ 013 -22:30 – 23:30)

Wednesday 12th boasts the criminally neglected electro / lofi genius of Frietboer (Cul de Sac 21:30 – 22:15) and the beautiful dubstep of King Midas Sound (Kleine Zaal @ 013 22:00 – 23:00).

Thursday, September 13th has a lot of stuff going on but the most intriguing night for our money is the late night residency at the Studio (22:45 ”“ 02:00) with a mix of artists from the Subcontinent ”“ the range is incredibly diverse from Indian classical to glitchcore. The gigs from Bandish Projekt , Kangding Ray  and Mahesh Vinayakram  look mouthwatering to us. You can begin your night with something more restful  – check the Paradox for an Erased Tapes showcase; A Winged Victory For The Sullen and piano genius Nils Frahm hog the limelight between 20:00 and 22:30

The weekend will be the busiest time with loads to see and do.

Friday, September 14th:

Friday has a whole host of things: not least the first night of LOuder THan War & Incendiary’s “Cultural Cringe” residency at Café  Extase:

The three gigs can’t be missed

20:00-20:45     Ravage! Ravage!

21:15-22:00     Gnod

22:30-23:15     The Membranes

Get a chance to see the glam racket of Ravage! Ravage!, all theatrics and sharp synths – they’re in love with John Foxx. Then stick around for GNOD ”“ true Burning Kraut-psyche rock trip out merchants as their collaboration with White Hills proved. Finally the brilliant swamp punk of The Membranes – one of the truly great underground bands  -should see you fizzing out into the night.

Elsewhere, there are some good debates at Main Room @ De NWE Vorst during the day ”“ keynote speeches by  Simon Reynolds and  Mark Fisher and at  15:15 – 16:15 “The Biggest Band in the World: a Q&A with Damo Suzuki (ex-Can)”.  We’re not sure what’s going to happen but it’s Damo. Then you should catch Greg Hainesat Paradox (17:15 – 18:00) and rev up for Extase with Nurse With Wound at 19:30.

It’d be daft (no, criminal) to miss The Membranes but you can catch 15 minutes of Chris & Cosey  at Kleine Zaal @ 013 (22:15 – 23:15)- luckily the distance between Extase & 013 is about 2 minutes’ walk do you can catch both  acts. Later we say finish the night with the brilliant Anthony Rother (Kleine Zaal @ 013 00:15 – 01:30) and the brilliant punk / bikers café known as Kafee ‘t Buitenbeentje hosts Messer at (00:15 – 01:00). This gig could be one of the surprises of the festival – great edgy German agit-prop.

Saturday 15th

Subroutine Lepel and Smikkelbaard join forces with Louder than War / Incendiary

Some of the characters from the true Dutch underground join us on the weekend:  Subroutine and Groningen’s great Lepel organization have very generously staggered their gigs at The Studio to take into account what’s happening at Extase. This means you can do both the Subroutine the and Louder than War / Incendiary showcases on the Saturday and Sunday without missing anything.

Not only that, if you ask for a button from the lads and lasses at Subroutine and if you present it at the door of Extase you’ll get a free Smikkelbaard CD from Dutch underground noise label Smikkelbaard. Can’t say fairer than that!

Subroutine / Lepel (at the Studio – no wristband needed = free gigs!)

Saturday/September 15:

14.00-14.30 || My Friend Television

14.45-15.15 || The Silhouettes

15.30-16.00 || Kantor Tzar Collectif

16.15-16.45 || Vox von Braun We really recommend Vox von Braun: their forthcoming LP is mixed and produced by fans of the band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Electric Soft Parade; and their beautiful stoner rock has echoes of  Ultra Vivid Scene.

Louder than War / Incendiary “Cultural Cringe” at Café Extase

20:00-20:45         Nouveau Vélo

21:15-22:00         Plant Duw

22:30-23:15         Paranoid Visions

We can’t recommend the three bands highly enough: from the inspirational guitar pop melodies of Nouveau Vélo (like the Pale Fountains) through the Welsh language psych punk of Plant Duw (playing their first ever gig outside of the UK) to the kaleidoscopic world of Dublin punk legends Paranoid Visions

Other stuff to see Saturday

Incendiary and Louder than War are involved in a number of panels, not least of which is at White Studio @ De NWE Vorst 15:15 – 16:15 Entertaining nonsense from the legendary manager of British Sea Power + daft comments from The Quietus and us.Other acts you should see (round our programme at the Extase) are Iceage whose brilliant punk blasts will lighten up Stage01 @ 013 at 19:30 – 20:00 and Hare Akedod(at Kafee ‘t Buitenbeentje

23:45 – 00:30). This is a great pick ”“ this Flemish band specialize in  psychedelic and experimental electro-acoustic improvisation. Finish things off with Moodymann(Kleine Zaal @ 013 02:00 – 04:00) A rare appearance from this very charismatic performer ”“ one of the true techno/house legends from Detroit.

Sunday 16th

Continuing our collaboration with Subroutine, Lepel and Smikkelbaard you can start the day at Studio

Subroutine / Lepel (at the Studio – no wristband needed = free gigs!)

14.00-14.30 || Homemade Empire

14:45-15.15 || The Fire Harvest

15.30-16.00 || WOLVON

”¦ and then go to Café Extase for Louder Than War / Incendiary

16:00-16:45     Fawn Spots

17:15-18:00     Gul Night Out

18:30-19:15     Boutros Bubba

We particularly recommend the left-right blitz of WOLVON (at Studio) and  the magnificent Fawn Spots  at Extase – both great young bands trading in firebrand guitar melodies. The Gul Night Out gig is sees their debut  7″ release, 100 copies on pink vinyl of Dutch squat noise. Truly one of the maddest anti-music bands we’ve seen. Sadly Boutros Bubba‘s gig is one of their last, don’t miss as it’ll be a tremendous experience: a mix of Beefheartian ideas & thrash & silly walks.

After that it’s pretty straightforward in our opinion: none of these bands need much introduction from us! Laibach (Dommelsch Zaal @ 013 19:30 – 21:00) Czech punk loonies Malignant Tumour (Little Devil 19:45 – 20:30) and art-noise-improv merchants Japandroids (Kleine Zaal @ 013 11:00 – 21:45) with the mighty Buzzcocks to cap it all off (Dommelsch Zaal @ 013 22:00 – 23:00)

Sadly stuff we’d love to see overlaps with our programme above  but you should try to fit in these three brilliant acts ”“ Kumbia Queers  (Cul de Sac 18:15 – 19:00)British Sea Power (Main Room @ De NWE Vorst 16:45 – 17:45) and Silver Apples (Kleine Zaal @ 013 15:15 15:45)

Kind regards Richard
