Glen Danzig (The Misfits) claims ‘woke bullshit’ means punk could never happen againGlen Danzig from The Misfits has been railing against ‘cancel culture and woke bullshit’ in an interview with Rolling Stone website claiming that punk would never have happened if that was the cultural climate at the time. In the interview he recalls how the Misfits song Last Caress’ “would do things just to piss people off,” and had an attitude of “fuck everybody. Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, fuck the world.”

The frontman of the band who became influential decades after punk despite not being that known in 1977 punk culture, stated that “I don’t think people will ever see anything like it again,” he said. “There won’t be any new bands coming out like that. Now, they will immediately get cancelled. People don’t understand, because everything’s so cancel-culture, woke bullshit nowadays, but you could never have the punk explosion nowadays, because of cancel culture and woke bullshit. You could never have it. It would never have happened. We’re lucky it happened when it did, because it’ll never happen again. You won’t have any of those kinds of bands ever again. Everyone’s so uptight and P.C., it’s just like, ‘OK, whatever.’”

Was punk like this? was punk apolitical? a bit right-wing even? and does anyone actually need a ‘new punk’. Where the Misfits a big part of punk or something that was later on? has punk become old men shouting at clouds? what the fuck was punk??

  1. Punk doesn’t need to happen again because it has never stopped happening. It has always been about winding up people in power and not toeing any party line. It has never been about shitting on the powerless, which is what some ‘anti-woke’ people do all the time. Simple as that really.

  2. Woke culture often gets offended by what is intended as satire – much of punk would have struggled as would The Life of Brian’s ‘I want to be a woman’ sketch. As with PC there’s a sanctimonious brigade that seems ever more vocal (The Guardian currently thinks that some people being upset that Justin Bieber’s got dreadlocks is actually news: – ludicrous sensitivity that empowers the Right. Dark times!

  3. Said as if him and his band railed against the world ? They relied heavily on image and too little substance tho craved attention. They were never shocking apart from shockingly bad and were never clever enough to be a political punk band. He sounds like a pissed of republican.

  4. He’s got Louder Than War and fucking Quietus alright, though he’s likely never heard of either.
Try listening to ‘Last Caress’ if you think they’re a joke. A damn sight better than Idles, or whatever other ear wax you’re currently distracting yourself with.
Its hiding in plain view: the disgust and horror of Sex Pistols ‘Bodies’ and ‘Belsen Was A Gas’ would never be tolerated by today’s woke idiots, who will never understand humanity’s depths (which they are trying to reignite with their revenge BS), yet those songs, and many others of the era, will continue to flay their ears like a boot stamping on a human face forever.
    Thank fuck.

  5. I’m not really a fan but so much modern rap is saying really extreme non-pc things. They get their stuff out there and aren’t cancelled…Just like the some bands from back then. It’s not my cup of tea but there is plenty of it. Ask anyone with a 14 year old son. Danzig is kidding himself if he thinks the “woke culture” is anything new. Same shit every decade. You also need to be able to put up with some criticism if you are going to put stuff out there. The complaints about the “woke” or cancel culture just seems to be from some overly sensitive dudes. Who cares? Toughen up

  6. I’m pretty sure Danzig is clowning all of you. It’s what he does. His legend is anarchy; anyone that claims to know his political views is wrong.
