Such Gold
The Haunt, Brighton

A sold out house at The Haunt for two Emo / Metal bands; Funeral For A Friend and Such Gold meant for a great evening but one that was slightly spoilt by a 10 PM curfew is in force so the venue can proceed with an 80’s disco afterwards – an all too common occurrence in Brighton (and everywhere – ed) these days.

Such Gold hail from Rochester, New York, and the bulk of their short set is drawn from current album, “Misadventures” and good it is as well. Frontman, Ben Kotin, is a jumping bundle of energy as he screams out the vocals, ably helped along by a decent backing. The highlights of their short set are opener, “Two Year Plan” and closer “Locked Out Of The Magic Theatre”. On this showing Such Gold have a good future ahead of them. They certainly whipped the crowd up for the main act and were well received by the audience. They also had a good day in Brighton apparently, finding things in the shops they couldn’t find in The States. One to watch for.

Set List :
” Two Year Plan ”
” Higher Places ”
” Understand And Forget ”
” Gut Rot ”
” Survival Of The Fondest ”
” You Are Your Greatest Threat ”
” Sycamore ”
” Storyteller ”
” Locked Out Of The Magic Theatre ”

Bridgend outfit Funeral For A Friend are touring in support of new album “Conduit”. Led by frenzied frontman Matt Davies, they soon turn the throng into a heaving mass of stagedivers and The Haunt is soon a throbbing mosh pit. Davies gets the crowd worked up with his stage banter and is an impressive ringmaster. 11 years on the road have made them a sleek outfit and recent chart placings seem well earned. Highlights of the set are “Red Is The New Black”, ” Damned If You Do , Dead If You Don’t” and the almost ballad like “History “. As A Further aside, bass player Richard Boucher would win a Peter Hook look alike contest easily. Sadly that 10 PM curfew means no encore.

In summary a good gig and everybody seemed to leave happy.

Set list :
” She Drove Me To Daytime Television ”
” Recovery ”
” The Distance ”
” Red Is The New Black ”
” Roses For The Dead ”
” Travelled ”
” Conduit ”
” You Want Romance ? ”
” The End Of Nothing ”
” Grey ”
” Damned If You Do , Dead If You Don’t ”
” High Castles ”
” Broken Foundation ”

When not listening to music of every type, i am watching Charlton Athletic, but despite this, I am still not a manic depressive yet. My motto is listen to everything at least once. Infatuated by The Ramones.
