Fuck Buttons: Electric Ballroom, Camden, London – live reviewFuck Buttons
Electric Ballroom, Camden, London
17th Sept 3013

Two blokes, hunched over a big table containing a disco ball and countless electronic gadgets that are tweaked, pressed, whacked with a stick and shouted at in a most unconventional way whilst making music that would probably cause your mother to bang on your bedroom door to casually ask if “everything was alright”. Keith Goldhanger spends an evening with Fuck Buttons.

Tunes without verses or choruses that buzz like bees, float around the Electric Ballroom like butterflies and cause the occasional out break of fist pumping and ecstatic cheering during bits of the songs that really don’t deserve this reaction at that particular point. 1100 people crammed into the venue standing tense, listening attentively and one by one letting go at various moments during the set. Each person being provided an outlet for the relief of actually hearing something utterly fantastic, stress relieving, therapeutic and totally euphoric.

When East London inhabitants left their living rooms last summer to be conned into thinking that the Queen was actually jumping out of that helicopter, those left at home to feed the cats and dogs, drink beer, eat pizza and actually watch something on the Telly were rewarded by recognising that one of the reasons Danny Boyle’s opening Olympics ceremony was so utterly fantastic was partly due to using the music we are hearing tonight being blasted into our living rooms. If only Trevor Nelson, who quite frankly wouldn’t shut the fuck up all night would have actually behaved like we did when we recognised these tunes last July and gone “FUCK ME!! ITS FUCKING FUCKING FUCK BUTTONS!!!!” whilst simultaneously coughing up half a can of Stella that hadn’t quite gone down a the time then TV history may have been made and instead of still being employed by the BBC he would have been working today as a DJ at the Camden Barfly, still struggling to gain full time employment but being one of the greatest mother fuckers in the UK instead of …..well, still being Trevor Nelson.

However, I digress …. Fuck Buttons play “Brainfeeze” early on and “Olympians” half way through, “Solar Surfer” somewhere in between those two epic tunes and it’s noisy. Our hairs on the back of our necks can’t work out which way to turn and in the midst of all the distortion we get beauty thrown at us in lumps which is made audible by the high frequencies that make this music as listenable as it is. It really is all about the frequencies. Low droning throbbing buzzing overlapped by high pitch chimes of beauty, a few drum beats here and there and a few squeals of vocals processed to fuck through one of the many little boxes laid bare on the stage. Two silhouetted screens showing real time images of the dynamic duo, a few flashing lights some fantastic tunes and a night to remember for many years to come.

Fuck Buttons. Absolutely fuck fuck fucking awesome.

  1. Saw them at Greenman festival recently and they were awesome. Did you manage to catch The Haxan Cloak and if so, how was his set?
