Everything Is Porn – the porn debateWe (Goldblade) once wrote a song called ‘Everything Is Porn’ because the modern world is crammed full of the stuff.

What was once top shelf smut for bored husbands with twitching right hands has now become a multi million dollar business and pervaded every corner of culture- everything is sold on porn from sex (of course) to cars to butter to politics. Porn is everywhere- maybe it always was- Roman cities had brothels on every corner and lewd graffiti and the same sort of moral debates that we are engaged in now.

Is porn, like prostitution, one of the oldest businesses on the planet? are the classic paintings porn? are all naked bodies porn?

The debate has reared up again because there is a move to get lads mags banished to the top shelf in brown paper bags and have them sort of  reclassified as porn mags.

This throws up so many contradictory ideas that it’s almost impossible to find a definite position- of course there is something quite tragic in learing at photo touched montages of plucked and scrubbed plastic women posed like boiled chickens- all breast and buttock shoving their g stringed arses at the camera like these are the only women body shapes on the planet – in a  society that will arrest people from walking down the street naked.

Somehow being nude is perfectly ok in a porn mag and disgusting in real life- it’s such a  classic British position- we like to think we are so open minded but we are still so square, so prudish. Flicking through the mags and you would think that we live in a  world of flash cars and plastic surgery girls with breasts made of silicone like it’s the only type of beauty, scaring young girls into the body perfect obsession and that can’t be right but can surpressing everything do us any good- can’t we have sex everywhere but a  less corny version of sex that includes a wider cross section of bodies- if we are going to have breasts everywhere maybe testicles will become the norm on billboards!

Whilst you may be politically correct your sub conscious will be playing tricks on you- everyone is sexual but is sexual the endless parade of silicon women in the lads mags? can sexual be broadened a bit to women and men of all shapes and sizes?

Is there a way out of this? is there a superior porn for people who need an image to toss themselves off? should porn be banned or bagged up? is David Beckham sitting around on a billboard in his undies the same thing the other way round but somehow not debated because it’s always assumed that this is a male problem? why are we terrified of nudity? what is the line when it becomes porn? are boy bands and pop music soft porn? does porn fuck up people’s minds causing people to talk about banning it or has the bible caused more deaths and carnage? what does sex sell and is everything porn?

  1. I would go further. I mean look at the coverage of the royal birth last week, the saturation of it all was practically pornographic. And the gun culture in the USA, the fetishistic element of it is pornographic to me. The way the Tories are going after the poor and those on benefits with their mates from The Sun and the Daily Fail borders on that too.

Anything that shows fanaticism is very close to a form of pornography to me. So much so that what people traditionally view as pornography (the legal stuff of course) doesn’t look so ‘bad’ by comparison. Because it isn’t when taken like anything else, in moderation and not taken too seriously.
