Electric Wizard
O2 Shepherds Bush Empire, London
17th October 2019
A cloud of occult settled on a packed out O2 Shepherds Bush Empire as Dorset’s ultimate doom metalheads Electric Wizard returned to London for the first time in three years to unleash their special brand of scuzzy blackness on an excited crowd.
For the uninitiated, an Electric Wizard show very much involves dipping a toe into a seething cauldron of sludgy, dark, viscous, often 10-minute-long, metal masterpieces swathed in a lyrical cloak of subculture, gothic literature and obsure horror films, set against a movie backdrop steeped in blood and Satanism. It’s a bit intense.
And there’s an overwhelming smell of cannabis. Perhaps it’s that, or the rawness of the guitars (Liz Buckingham – yikes, is that an upside-down cross? – and Haz Wheaton), the relentless pounding (Simon Poole), or Jus Oborn’s tortured vocals that is hypnotically compelling and ultimately leaves you wanting more.
Their current tour now continues in the States throughout November.
