are you going to bring a nice cardigan mr West?

There has been much online hand wringing that the massed fans of Kanye West don’t know who Paul McCartney is.

Twitter and Facebook is full of teeth gnashing as the older pop generation bang their heads on their keybaords at the perceived ignore of the Kanye West fans who had taken to twitter to wonder who this ‘new act’ Paul McCartney was after their hero had worked on newly released single Only One with the ex Beatle leaving tweets like.

@DuesNice remarked: ‘Kanye has a great ear for talent. This Paul McCartney guy gonna be huge.’

@percyBlacksom posted: ‘Who is Paul McCartney? He boutta blow up thanks to Kanyer!!!’

@CurvedDaily added: ‘This is why i love Kanye for shining light on unknown artists.’

And OVOJosh wrote: ‘I don’t know who Paul McCartney is, but Kanye is going to give this man a career w/ this new song!!’

West and McCartney collaborated on the track together and the result was a deluge of West fans wondering who this Paul McCartney person is and thinking he is a new artist been given leg up by the hip hop legend.
Whilst this is quite amusing it proves little- why should a mass of hip hop teenagers even know who Macca is nowadays? this is not running down Macca’s thumbs aloft contribution to popular culture which is, of course, immense but in music all things move on and I wonder how many 15 year olds at the time of the Beatles could name the best selling artists of the 1920’s…

Also how many people can name the whole line up of AC/DC whose Back in Black album outsold the best selling Beatles album by 3 to 1? Pop culture plays weird tricks on the memory and what is perceived as being pillars of the establishment by some people can actually be dust to others and that’s a good thing! Why should everyone be a culture studies student to appreciate music? maybe it’s a good thing to live in a post Beatles world…

Maybe even Macca knows this and that is probably the reason why he is working with Kanye West- to get his name into a new generation of music fans- that’s how the mainstream business clicks on and on. Pop music is a restless beast and not always a museum…
