I don’t think there is anyone that doesn’t have an opinion on fur..
Most of the people who object to fur are people who object to the suffering and cruelty that the animals are put through on the fur farms. Norway, where I live, has a large fur industry and the farms receive financial support from the Norwegian Government. Last year it was debated whether or not to cut the financial support due to a video footage of the cruelty that was taking place on a few of these farms.
Two animal rights organizations The Network for Animal Freedom and the Norwegian Society for the Protection of Animals claimed to have filmed shocking scenes at a farm last year. A representative for the fur industry then stated that animal rights activists break in to the farms during the night to set the animals free, but only succeed in scaring them. They also say that the media gives a completely distorted picture of the fur farms. They claim to have a flexible cage system for foxes and climbing cages for mink.. But should any animals be kept in cages ? Foxes and mink are usually found roaming in large area’s in the wild. Is it cruel to simply confine them at all ? Would it be more human to hunt them in their natural environment like we do wolves and elk ? .
I often wonder when I read articles in the media about celebrities campaigning against wearing fur and PETA activist attacking people wearing fur coats, whether there is any truth to the allegations that all fur farms are cruel. The Norwegian Food and Safety Authority is in charge of monitoring the fur farms and inspect 101 farms yearly. Surely they would close the farms down, had they seen any cruelty?
For the record, I am against cruelty to animals in any shape or form, but where do we draw the line ? Farms all over the world that keep livestock are bound by the law to treat the animals humanly. A large part of the population eat meat and eggs. We wear leather. But there seems to be a wide spread passion when it comes to fur. I would certainly not buy my meat from a farm or certain company were it proved they were cruel to the animals, however I doubt it would stop me from eating meat.. So why is it that the whole fur industry is getting such a massive protest for the cruelty of a few farmers ? Should everyone stop buying fur and put them all out of business ? And why stop at fur ? Why not protest to the cruelty to fish. Trawlers catch them in their nets and they die a slow and horrible death on the boat. Should mankind find alternative food and clothes , or is it the law that is lacking ? Should we legislate a much stricter line in the keeping and slaughtering of livestock, be it for their meat, leather or fur coat’s ? Should we be allowed to have livestock at all on farms ?
