Vivienne Wilson found out something really strange had happened to Des Dillon, who wrote the hugely popular Old Firm play Singin’ I’m No A Billy He’s A Tim and numerous books including Me and Ma Gal, which was shortlisted for the Saltire Society Scottish First Book of the Year Award in 1995. She decided she should investigate.
Dillon has recently written a play called Village of the Damned. It explores what MAPPA is by imagining what would happen if notorious child killer, Robert Thompson, was sent to live in a small village in Galloway.
“MAPPA stands for Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements and in order to “protect” the public they stick a rapist, killer or paedophile next door and don’t tell you.” Explained Des. “Furthermore if this protected offender commits a crime they are not taken to court ”â their risk is re-assessed by MAPPA and their supervision increased accordingly. MAPPA can rent or spot purchase property anywhere but they seem to specialise in saturating rural Scottish villages with monsters.
“On Saturday 25th May I was visited by Galloway Police who gave me the heavy duty questioning over Village of the Damned. Wondering when the police gave powers to censor playwrights I posted this on Facebook:
“BIZARRE!!! The Galloway Police have just been and given me the heavy duty questioning over VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED.
“Since when were the Police given powers to censor playwrights. This is 2012 in Scotland not the fuckin middle ages!”Â
Des is now in negotiation with a company who are looking to buy the film rights to the play. Village of the Damned can be read here.
A spokesperson for Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary confirmed that they had spoken to Des and said: “Police received a complaint, however after initial examination it was deemed at this stage to be a civil matter.”Â
Has anyone else from the LTW community been subjected to this sort of questioning? I think a lot of us would be interested in finding out how often this happens. Please comment below.
