Cover ArtIn another master stroke (and middle finger salute to “the profit motive”) abrasive, aggressive and super experimental phenomenon Death Grips have done, once again, what they do so well – shock the music world with a totally out of the blue and unexpected blow to convention by throwing out to the world another free (as in gratis) album.

In a simple comment on their Facebook page last night which read:

New Release: Government Plates by Death Grips

…the duo broke the news. It’s now been shared 1,400 times. News swiftly spread onto the Twits, properly filling up my timeline in a way that no other release has done all year. The album is also available to stream (or download) from Soundcloud (see embed below).

Also accompanying the release was a set of videos including this one:

… for the track snappily titled: “You might think he loves you for your money but I know what he really loves you for it’s your brand new leopard skin pillbox hat”. The other videos can be found at Death Grips Youtube channel.

Readers will no doubt remember that this isn’t the first time Death Grips have given away their work for free. Much to the surprise (initially) and annoyance (latterly) of their previous record label, who promptly showed them the door, their last album, NO LOVE DEEP WEB, also came out originally as a free download, a move spurred on by the label being tardy releasing it themsleves.

The main reason this has come so out of the blue is because the band’s Zach Hill announced in May that he would be taking some time off from Death Grips’ touring act in order to write and direct a feature film soundtracked by Death Grips. Speculation is therefore rife that this album’s the actual soundtrack to that film, a theory that one of the label’s who were early supporters of Death Grips, Deathbomb Arc, have backed up pointing out:

The inclusion of “Birds”, a track previously noted as being from this film, would imply that.

I dunno about you but personally I’d pay really good money to see a film with this as a soundtrack. If I get the opportunity anyway and the film doesn’t get released as a freebie too!

Guy is a former full time member of the Louder Than War editorial team, who's since moved on to pastures new. Music's been a large part of his life since he first stumbled across Peel on his tranny as a fifteen year old. His whole approach to music was learnt from Peel in fact, which includes having as inclusive a taste in music as possible. Guy devotes most of his time looking for new music & although he's been known to say "the only good music is new music" he pretty much accepts this is bollocks. Favourite band The Minutemen.
