Highly influential cult artist Daniel Johnston has died at the age of 58. The legend suffered a heart attack last night.

We are very sad to hear about Daniel Johnston, who suffered a heart attack last night and passed away at the age of 58.

The epitome of a beloved cult musician, Johnston’s songs have been covered by the likes of Mark Linkous, Jeffrey Lewis, Tom Waits, Karen O, Yo La Tengo, Eels and The Flaming Lips. Famously, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain was a huge fan.

Beautifully wonky, lo-fi songs enthused with fun, love, pain, melody and an almost childlike quality that made them so endearing.

A truly unique and gifted songwriter and artist, Johnston may have been troubled but he brought a lot of joy into the world. RIP Daniel.
