9. Jesus And Mary Chain

Chris : After punk there was the Smiths and then the Jesus And Mary Chain who were probably my favourite band. I saw them more times than any others. I think the first time was in Loughborough (possibly Nottinham Garage Jan 31st 1985) . It was one of their classic 15 minute gigs. The gig was in a tiny bar – I’m pretty certain it was there after that I just went to see them all the time. Then Upside Down came out and they were playing that on John Peel all the time. It seemed like ages until their debut album, Psychocandy came out. We went to see them all the time. They toured extensively and every time you went to see them there always a notice written on paper with a biro on the door that said the Mary Chain don’t do encores! I got one of the notices at home that I nicked and I got Jim Reid, who I’ve met a few times and I correspond with and see from time to time and I keep meaning to dig it out and get him to sign it. They were great. I really loved them.
