Celebrities fake number of Twitter followers

In the old days they would buy up singles to create fake hits in the charts, now celebrities are faking the size of their Twitter accounts.

Apparently Lady Gaga is one of several celebs and politicians who have bought up followers with Gaga potentially purchasing up to 70 per cent of the followers on her Twitter account meaning that most of her 29 million strong  following are not real according to this report.

Does this mean that the other top accounts who boast following larger than small countries are doing the same? What is the point? And does this mean the size of your twitter account is more important than who is listening to your music?
