Burzum’s Varg Vikernes has been arrested in France, accused of plotting a massacre
The Norwegian musician, who was jailed for several years for the murder of the Mayhem mainman Oystein Aarseth in 1993 at the dawn of the Norwegian black metal scene, has been a controversial figure for many years with his outspoken views on paganism and sometimes neo nazi and anti semitic views.
In 1991, he founded the one-man music project Burzum and became part of the early Norwegian black metal scene. In 1992, he took part in the arson of at least three Christian churches in Norway, along with other members of the scene. By early 1993, Vikernes had recorded four albums as Burzum and another with fellow black metal band Mayhem. When Mayhem guitarist Øystein ‘Euronymous’ Aarseth was stabbed to death in August that year, Vikernes was arrested and charged with the murder and jailed for many years.
Currently living in France he was taken into custody at his farm near the town of Salon-la Tour in the Corrèze département because the French authorities believed he was ‘planning a massacre’ after officials had started investigating him because the Norwegian mass murderer Anders Brevik had sent him a copy of his manifesto. “”That was at the origin of the investigation … There were several suspicions that made the services fear he could possibly carry out a violent act,” an official said. Vikernes is on record as not being a fan of Brevik so the situation remains confused.
His wife had recently joined a shooting club and purchased weapons.
