Xmas treat for fans of The Fall – Hex-mas Enduction Hour by Chicago Now

A seasonal reimagining of The Fall’s Hex Enduction Hour. Lyrically appropriate for all ages, a new hex-mas tradition for you and yours. Who fills the stocking? The Gift Priest, The Christmassical…  The genius idea of Chicago Now (actually, one Neal Markowski) well executed.

The Fall always had a bizarre kind of connection with the Festive Season: The debut album and first Peel session included the grudgeful ditty No Xmas For John Quays.  And the session version featured Mark E Smith cheekily saying “Make sure the album this song is on is in your Christmas stocking..” during the break-down.

A world away from the tacky tinselly schmaltz of Chistmas, the Fall seemed to personify the pissed cynic getting rat-arsed on free booze at the Xmas shindig. But this ‘seasonal re-imagining’ by a Chicago avant-garde musician is a real treat – which I discovered on a Fall-fan Facebook group….

It’s the full album – Xmas-i-fied…

The Classical becomes The Christmassical  –  “There is no tinsel is my brag. Your taste for silver reveals a lust for a tree of artifice !”

Fortress/Deer Park is transformed into Workshop/Reindeer Park – “I spent time in Santa’s Workshop / Much discussion in room C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S”

Hip Priest  is now Gift Priest  – “These gifts are…apprec-i-a-ted.”  – “I got my last clean Santa suit outta the wardrobe!”

Mere Psued Mag Ed.  becomes Mere Suit Hat Red … and so on

Some tracks, like Just Step Sideways (Just Gift 12 Days) if I’m honest, don’t really work that well – but there are more hits than misses. More laughs than groans.  The music is reproduced faithfully in a garage style.

Hope you all had a Merry Hex-Mas and continue to have a great Boxing Day and New Years… and at least this should cheer up a few grumpy old Scrooge-like Fall aficionados. It worked for me!
