41655_originalThe La’s are now the honey coated mystical melodic legends they were always going to be.

Every britpop band can trace their DNA back to the fantastic group whose small catalogue drips such perfect pop that it’s hard to believe that they had  brief flirt with success before being bogged down in the wreckage of pop.

Mainman Lee Mavers had the golden touch but the story is far more complex than that – this was a band that he joined after all – a band built around Mike Badger – the artful dodger whose talent has never been recognised outside his own home city and who has co written this book with music jounalist Tim Peacock.

The Rhythm & The Tide’, the book about The La’s early days and the typically Liverpool multi projects and musical jams and ideas – at one point me and Mike had a project going with another early La’s member Paul Hemmings on guitar.

I love books like this – full of the hope and madness of youth and the creative yearning played out against the backdrop red northern bricks and musical passion and history. The book is must for anyone who wants to know were all the stuff came from – from the Stone Roses (who I reviewed supporting the La’s in 1987) to Oasis from Liverpool back to Manchester – it’s the last great untold story in that glorious musical lineage and I can only offer thanks that Tim and Mike wrote this enthralling tale down in such a heartwarming and detailed way that reminds you of the thrill and madness of creativity.
