the tragic death of Sophie Lancaster is now on stage.

Simon Armitage’s Black Roses is on at the Royal Exchange Theatre Manc from Sept 26th until 29th Sept. Sylvia Lancaster is played by Julie Hesmondhalgh,  who plays Coronation Street’s Hayley Cropper.

Black Roses: The Killing of Sophie Lancaster is a moving response to the murder of Sophie, the young student, who was killed because she dressed differently. Julie will be playing the part of Sophie’s mother and friend of LTW, Sylvia, with Sophie played by Rachel Austin.

Black Roses is an elegy for Sophie in which she tells her own story through a series of poems by the award-winning poet Simon Armitage, alongside the words of her mother, Sylvia Lancaster, remembering her daughter’s shortened life.

The piece provoked an unprecedented response when it premiered on Radio Four last year, winning the BBC Audio and Music Best Speech Programme of the Year Award.
