Black Flag tour the UK in October 2019
Do you go see the legendary band when abuse allegations hang over the founding member?
Black Flag. ‘To all intents and purposes America’s first hardcore punk band’.
This could well be the only chance to see the influential band in the UK. Fact.
It’s the first time they have played here in 30 years.
THE Black Flag.
(Well, the band line-up per the official website seems to be Greg Ginn, Mike Vallely and ….err.)
The press release is short, stark, blunt. Few details. Just some facts. No extravagant claims or hyperbole.
BLACK FLAG is an American band formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, CA by guitarist, primary songwriter, and sole continuous member Greg Ginn. Their discography includes seven studio albums and two live albums. The band has released all of their material on Ginn’s independent label, SST Records beginning with 1981’s Damaged. Vocalist, Mike Vallely, first sang with the band as a guest vocalist in 2003, before becoming the band’s fifth vocalist and touring with the band in 2014. BLACK FLAG is currently recording new material for a future studio release and will be touring from the Summer of 2019.
Black Flag have a long, messy, tangled, complicated history and extended membership including several vocalists, the best known of whom are Henry Rollins and Keith Morris.
There is a band operating under the name FLAG who feature more former Black Flag members than Black Flag.
Greg Ginn has been accused of some awful shit – with testimony from another former Black Flag vocalist.
It’s a fuckin’ tangled web….
And the age-old debate of Love The Art – but not necessarily the Artist, rears its head again.
Black Flag is not just a band. It is not ‘a brand’ either and it’s not just just one man (in my opinion). Black Flags status as a seminal, defining and important hardcore band can not be denied or under-estimated. Those original first five years-worth of releases were phenomenal. The stripped-down cranked-up sound makes the blood course thru your veins that much faster. They embody rage and disillusionment and release.
Each and every member played a part and made a vital contribution, but yeah Ginn was the founder.
You all know how to use Google.
Do a bit of research first. I decided against putting links up to make it easy for you.
Know a bit about what is alleged to have happened before making your decision to see this band.
Black Flag may well be a shadow of a ghost of its former self… or it may be a thrilling visceral hardcore experience from the vantage point of the pit…
If you want to see Black Flag live in 2019 in the UK, then go. Enjoy it. Have a blast. Feed off that beautiful noise. Enjoy the raw, savage art for what it is.
