Arrows Of Love: Shacklewell Arms London – live review

Arrows Of Love
London Shacklewell Arms
11th July 2012

Full throttle noise rock band Arrows Of Love have just released a killer single called Honey which summons up the spirit of every nasty sounding band you’ve ever heard before. In other words they’re the business. Keith Goldhanger was lucky enough to see them play the Shacklewell Arms recently & here’s how it went down.

First things first. The Shacklewell Arms for anyone based in the south and over 40 is very much like the Camden Falcon. For the rest of the Population of the world, the Shakleton arms is a pub in East London which is modestly occupied until about 9.30PM when it suddenly without warning gets packed with people who stand shoulder to shoulder whilst two people at the very least will remain stubborn enough to continue playing pool elbowing their way to the victorious level of being able to continue playing another game.

Bands snuggle up in a corner, get pissed and then play in the back room and whatever racket they seem to be making clashes gloriously with whatever the bar staff are playing in the front bar …

Arrows Of Love: Shacklewell Arms London – live reviewTonight is the launch party for the ARROWS OF LOVE single “Honey”. ON CASSETTE ! Yes kids Cassette (for the youngsters out there that’s like an MP3 on wheels) Idle chatter early evening includes the words “Stone” and “Roses” and a cancelled Rick Astley gig in Hyde park. Tonight we’re gonna party like It’s 1989 and even though I see NO ONE waving their mobiles in the air the authenticity is ruined by the lack of a packet of Bensons and the occasional rumbling of the odd GALLOWS track coming from the bar. OR from DJ in the back room, its impossible to tell. (reports of an oldish man standing on a DeLorean car attaching a piece of wire to an overhead cable whilst driving very fast up and down Shaklewell land could not be confirmed).

This band have the eqivalent of 4 David Yow’s (Jesus Lizard) in their line up – it would be 5 but someone has to play the drums … 2 of these double up as Courtney Loves’ and one trebles up as a step ladder utilising a wall to keep them upright. Its a spectacle worth watching that should become an Olympic sport one day with the rules being; run around with instruments and try to fall over in the smallest space you can find whilst still playing a mix of scratch acid / big black / suicidal tendencies / influenced tunes (with an occasional ballad in the middle for a half time rest).

The tunes are a faultless cacophony of controlled noise that bring to mind the wonderful At the Drive In at their best. The audience move occasionally in order to not get splattered by a guitar being swung around and the bar staff look nervously at anything glass that’s not glued down on a table (i.e Everything) – REALLY FUCKING ACE!!!!

Cant wait for them to make a record.

Keith Goldhanger -- Spent the '90s as a frontman with London noise merchants HEADBUTT - spent the '80s in 'Peel favourites' BASTARD KESTREL. Spent a few years mashing up tunes and remixing bands as HIDEOUS WHEEL INVENTION. Is often out and about getting in the way of things and bumping his head on low ceilings - Will give your band the time of day but will dislike any band that balances full pints of alcohol on the top of guitar amps (Not keen on lead singers that wear hats either).
