Anxiety Junkies Self Sabotage

Anxiety Junkies – Self Sabotage (self released)

DL

Out Now

Louder Than War were asked to listen to this DIY hardcore release from Anxiety Junkies so Nathan Brown accepted the mission and dusted off his skateboard.

Take a huge vat of Black Flag, sprinkle in some DRI and a smattering of MDC and you get Anxiety Junkies from Savannah, Georgia. Shouted raw throaty hardcore vocals over speedy guitar riffs followed closely by the bass, and a snare heavy drum sound. The lo-fi production on this DIY release works for the style of music – they claim “our sound is meant to embody the noise that punk bands from the 80s used to sound like” and they have certainly achieved that. Not a million miles from the early days of the Stupids, only their skatepunk sounds were actually recorded in the ’80s.

I like this but with so many bands doing this type of thing in local scenes all over the globe and many who’ve we’ve done it better Anxiety Junkies may be an “also ran”. I bet they are great live.

Lyrically they mostly seem to indulge in throw away nihilistic teenage skater rants and my momentary concern that the song “Crossdresser” might have been anti-trans was put at ease – they get the benefit of doubt it seems to be observational humour rather than the Jock hatred I feared I might find.

If you like US Hardcore, feel the need to shout “thrash!” every now and then and you either wear your cap with the peak turned up or write x xaroundx xeveryx xwordx you will most likely love this.
