5. Joy Division – Unknown Pleasures

My first rock instrument was the bass guitar and because of that i loved The Stranglers and Joy Division. I bought into the melodic bass and hollow eyed aggression of Joy Division before i did the existential angst (that came later!).

The icy atmosphere and alien sounds where not just an artistic statement to my young self it also sounded like i’d chanced on a strange radio frequency and that listening to it was somewhat taboo. ‘New Dawn Fades’ is still to this day one of my most played songs of all time.
