Single cover for 'her' by Anastasia VolAnastasia Vol: her

(Out Now)

Anastasia Vol – master of the dark emotion, merchant of the melancholy – blends smoky instrumentation with lush vocals on soaring new single her. Sam Lambeth reviews.

Anastasia Vol deals in darkness. Like Leonard Cohen and Lana Del Rey, she is adept at the theatrical, the fantastical, the thrilling. On her latest single her, Vol, is her most accomplished and amazing outing yet. In the past, the London-based balladeer has carved a niche as a purveyor of potent vocals, mercurial stories and fragmented, dusty guitars. With her first single of 2021, Vol distils dark feelings and haunting introspection into a soaring slice of orchestral pop.

On her press release, Vol describes her as being about “deep sinister thoughts and jealousy, attraction and confusion”. She delivers. Like fellow chanteuse Lykke Li, Vol is able to conjure up the most ominous of emotions through the power of her voice. Also like Li, she decorates her delightful voice with perfect instrumentation.

Smoky and mysterious, musically her has the subtle keyboards and free-form feel of a debauched Parisian music room. However, keeping it stripped back works wonders, pushing Vol’s thunderous vocals to the forefront. At points tender, at others tenacious, Vol’s amazing and far-ranging delivery is a masterclass in melancholy and mystery.

With a music video set to follow later this spring, her is a giant leap forward from a fantastic performer. Let’s just hope Vol has more dark energy to conjure.
