Alex James to launch ‘Britpop’ drink- is he allowed to copyright a word he didn’t make up?

Alex james, the cheesy bass player from Blur is to luanch a drink called ‘Britpop’.

Apparently he has already copyrighted the word ‘Britpop’ which has got us wondering how he can be allowed to do this as the word Britpop does not actually belong to him or anyone.

Made up by LTW boss John Robb in 1989 when he was writing for Sounds and initially used when writing about bands like the Las and the Stone Roses it eventually became the word for the explosion of  British guitar bands in the mid nineties and the word has seeped into popular culture.

It now seems to be a fizzy drink- we may have to speak to our lawyers.
