Tom Tom Club is celebrating the 36th anniversary of their iconic debut album, which featured classic hits like “Genius of Love” and “Wordy Rappinghood,” with a brand new music video directed by Nico de Pouldu, edited by Jim Swaffield, and filmed on the beach in Bretagne, France for “As Above So Below.”

Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth explain the inspiration and inception behind the video:

“Tom Tom Club is celebrating thirty-six years! So when we met director Nico de Pouldu in France, he suggested making a video. He put us in an extraordinary setting where many talented people offered to help him create a narrative for his vision. The song Nico chose, “As Above So Below,” is a celebration of nature and our deep spiritual gratitude for life on this Earth. The saying “As Above So Below” means “as in heaven, so on earth.” It has come down to us from ancient wisdom older than any of the world’s existing religions. Its mystery as a prayer has been folded into all of them. We are grateful to everyone who participated, including Jim Swaffield, who wove the raw footage in post production into the tapestry you see here. Merci Coralline! Merci Fanny! Mais surtout, merci Nico! ”

Tom Tom Club was formed by Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth in 1981. Graduates from the Rhode Island School of Design, they moved to New York City where they founded Talking Heads with David Byrne and Jerry Harrison. In early 1981, Talking Heads took a hiatus after five years of touring and four studio albums. Chris and Tina began Tom Tom Club and signed with Chris Blackwell and Island Records.

When legendary reggae producer Lee “Scratch” Perry failed to show up for a scheduled recording sessions in the Bahamas, Blackwell allowed Chris and Tina to produce the album themselves with Jamaican engineer Steven Stanley.
