The Membranes celebrate a great summer of festival appearances and a critically acclaimed album that marked what the NME called ‘an extraordinary comeback’ with a packed autumn that starts of with very special gig in tallinn in Estonia with the 20 piece all woman Sireen Choir who will perform with the band. This ambitious and epic gig will also be taking place in Lisbon and Manchester before xmas as well. These are events where they explore space and the universe through music, art, film and experiments and will be turned into a major festival in 2016.

In Estonia they will play the whole of the Dark Matter/Dark Energy album at a special Universe Explained event as part of the science week in the country. The event is one of a series of occasional special gigs put on by the band where they combine in conversations conducted by John Robb with leading scientists from the CERN project, experiments, films and a gig by the Membranes.

“I saw the choir play in Estonia in the spring and it was an astonishing concert,’ explains Robb, adding, ‘Whilst I was watching them I could hear their voices underlining the drones and the dark melancholy in the Membranes album and the idea of two quite different musical forms coming together seemed so perfect that we went ahead and did it.’

The Membranes will also record a single with the choir – a reworking of one of the tracks from their album.

The band have also been entered for the Mercury Music prize and have started work on a film about the Dark Matter/Dark Energy album and its themes of the universe, life and death – the film will see them travel to CERN to speak the scientists and also play more special Universe Explained gigs including one with an orchestra in Manchester before Christmas.
