Streaming through Spotify etc to be included in official charts
The official charts will be changing this month with the inclusion of streaming through services like Spotify and Deezer which will count towards the UK’s weekly singles chart from July, the Official Charts Company has announced.
In a reflection of the changing way that people consume music streaming doubled in popularity in the UK between 2013 and 2014, from 100 million to 200 million streams a week, currently averaging 260 million.
It will be interesting to see how much this will effect the make up of the charts with evidence already that things could change a lot with an example likeBastille’s track Pompeii is the UK’s most streamed track ever, but only made number two in the singles countdown.
Could also be interesting for many underground bands who are releasing beyond the record shop chains and can’t afford to press up the still substantial amount of CDs and vinyl needed to chart.
