Shooting Fish: Passive Regressive – album review

Shooting Fish – Passive Regressive Self Released

CD/DL

Out now

Eight song mini-album from a self-proclaimed “DIY punk band from Portsmouth”. Shooting Fish are a breath of fresh air says Ged Babey.

In one of their best, raging songs Shooting Fish attempt to define themselves and their raison d’etre as a band and their place in, or rather outside of the Simon Cowell / Identikit Indie world of the Music Biz. It’s an anthem for a new generation of punk bands and it blazes with energy and hope.

Musically and in spirit It reminds me of the dayglo-wing of Anarcho-punk of thirty years ago; bands like Hagar the Womb, Lost Cherees and Rubella Ballet but sounds absolutely magnificent. Bold, fresh and full of naïve punk-rock-charm.

Shooting Fish have probably never heard (of) any of those bands as they list their influences on their facebook as NoFX, Rise Against, Bad Religion (all-American Epitaph-type stuff and the wholly appropriate piece of punk rock movie dialogue intertwined with their outro is from the movie SLC Punk! (from 1998)

“Another thing that pisses me off, talking about who started punk rock music. Was it…the Sex Pistols in England? Was it… the Ramones and the Velvet Underground in New York? “It was the Ramones!”, “It was the Sex Pistols!” Who cares who started it?! It’s music. I don’t know who started it, and I don’t give a shit. The one thing I know is that we did it harder, we did it faster, and we definitely did it with more love baby. You can’t take that away from us”.

Which as a summation of young punk-atitude is about as cool as you can get.

While I’m at it I may as well let you hear the song. And read some of the lyrics.

New Song © Shooting Fish

Some new blood for a new regime
Free from unfair use policy
Where we make music just for fun and share what we love with everyone
A revolution of you and me to destroy their fucking industry,
Technology brings social change then our new song will never sound the same

We won’t make those same mistakes
‘Cos this is our new song, and it’s what they hate

Three big chords and lungs full of breath
With broken sticks and no regrets,
With enjoyment and integrity
For those who listen and believe
A revolution of you and me to destroy their fucking industry
Then we’ll make music just for fun and share what we love with everyone

If you like that, there are another seven just as good. Shooting Fish are a really great, inspirational young band with masses of suss, tunes and potential. Female drummer, who’s brilliant and vocalist, who reminds me of a female equivalent of Eddie Argos ( from Art Brut) at times, plus token male guitar-players.

Check them out, buy the album, book them to play your town. If this seems a little unlike an unbiased review, well, this is a band with no time for Press Releases and publicity-chasing, who aren’t afraid of being ‘political’. This is a band who I just happened to see bottom of the bill at a four-band show that cost a fiver to get in. (The Barn at the Milton Arms Portsmouth, once a month Punk Rock’n’roll nights run by local legend John Flash & friends). This is a band that my wife drew to my attention with a dig in the ribs and a “Stop smoking and come and see this lot! I want their album”. This is a band who can thrash thru one of the dullest songs ever, Don Henleys Boys of Summer, and make it seem like the best piece of pop-music you’ve ever heard.

This is the sound of the punk rock D-I-Y underground which I’m glad to see isn’t just populated by over-forties. Vive Le Fish!
