Savage Messiah: punk art book: a review
Laura Oldfield Ford
Laura Oldfield Ford is one of the best young artists in the UK. Utilising the punk art of the late seventies and especially Gee Vaucher’s great work on the Crass sleeves, Laura has taken it somewhere else.
With stark images that document the decay of modern Britain she combines her fascination with drifting and what has been termed psycho geography with the modern London city scapes. But she is far smarter than that and living situationist graffiti slogan ‘only anarchists are pretty to its full she paints her shadowy glamourous self into the cartoon strips.
This works perfectly giving the book a personal sense of narrative as the sketched city scapes tumble by the lone figure of Laura herself appears like a ghost creating her own pictorial diary of the cracked concrete of the modern world.
Acerbic, funny and brilliant company she is a quite brilliant artist and this book is a brilliant entry into her unique and very political world view point.
