Led Zeppelin face legal claim over Stairway TO Heaven

It’s one of the most famous songs of all time, a song that epitomised the seventies and still reaks of patouli oil every time you hear it.

Led Sep’s Stairway To Heaven is now, though, the subject of a  copyright infringement action  on behalf of late guitarist Randy California, who played on the same bill as Led Zeppelin in the 1960s. The allegations are centred around the famous Stairway to Heaven opening guitar riff apparently being loosely resembles guitar work on an instrumental called Taurus which was written by Randy California’s Los Angeles-based psychedelic band, Spirit, in 1968.

His lawyers say that he should be given a writing credit on the 1971 track.

Copyright and music is a tricky business and there have been many famous cases like with George Harrison and My Sweet Lord- in recent years there have been a lot less and these kind of things are very hard to prove in court- it will be interesting to see how this case turns out.

  1. Why the 40 year wait to do something about it?

  2. I think both writers owe a debt to Robert and Richard asherman’s Hushaby Mountain sung by Dick Van Dyke in Chitty Chitty Bamg Bang ! Listen tk all three.

  3. we all get insperashion from all ciends of places if thay wer inspired by the getar riffs then give the Randy some respect . they will now in there harts if it wos trow . you shod honer your insperashions ..wer all jest diferend interpretations of each other .xxxx j9 sorry abut speling i my chreatr made me dislesick

  4. I have listened to both versions and in my opinion there is NO infringement. They are 2 distinctly different songs. Both in sentiment, melody and structure. The only similarity is the style of guitar playing. Copyright law I believe works on the percentage of similarity and this is tenuous to say the least. Influence possibly copying no. We are all influenced – we have to be, total originality is rare and unlikey. Talent copies – genius steals and re-invents or takes a part and creates a new and better whole.
