Johny Skullknuckles & The Kopek Millionaires ‘Always At Never With’ – album review & CD competition…
Johny Skullknuckles & The Kopek Millionaires ‘Always At Never With’ (JSK Records)
Debut album from The Kopek Millionaires, essentially a coupling of the bands now sold out previous EP releases…so what you get is the “Heartaches & Hardons” mini album which was released in November 2012 and the deluxe version of the “Christmas Girl” single which was released November 2013 plus a bonus demo version from of an as yet unreleased song.
‘S.F.I.L’ opens proceedings and immediately references Skullknuckles own musical history; sleazy punk roots and layers of guitar noise…’One Broken Heart’ has a darker edge but is essentially a huge, twangy foot stomper that also allows Skullknuckles to display his previously unheard vocal talents; ‘Over You’ is frankly magnificent – three minutes of pop genius, its crammed with razor sharp hooks, and comes at you with ferocious energy, this is an all guns blazing rush of exuberance; ‘Amphetamine Blues’ is the sole cover version, though Skullknuckles effortlessly brings enough to the Vibrators tune to call it his own…’Six O’clock In The Morning’ is a twisted power pop ballad complete with keyboard effects and neat guitar solo; the entire EP being constructed around driving guitar and drum riffs which combine in a punk/Hanoi Rocks style sleaze fest; the result being a collection of insanely catchy, raucous rebel rousers…and that spirit lived on for the ‘Christmas Girl EP’ – sounding like a glorious collision between Santa himself and a gaggle of Hanoi Rocks obsessives, huge dollops of gooey cheese, a rollicking dangerously catchy tune whilst Skullknuckles (tongue firmly in chiselled, no doubt rouge highlighted cheek!) releases an impassioned plea to the object of his desire “Will you be my Christmas girl oh my Christmas girl, I’ll give you my world if you’ll be my, Christmas girl my Christmas girl, You got my head in a whirl (Your such a beautiful girl)”
This has got the lot; sleigh bells, powering drums, an overtly simple guitar riff that instantly burrows into your brain, a bridge built around a mass sing-a-long; the entire track the musical equivalent to all your Christmas lights, the glitter, and the chintz; its brash, its gaudy – it’s just over 2mins of a mainlined Christmas rush – what’s not to like?
This is a very strong release that should find favour with anyone who loves big guitar riffs and strident defined vocals. Since “Heartaches & Hardons” The Kopek Millionaires have performed their debut live gig, with more in the pipeline – on the evidence offered up here, the promised gigs are mouth-wateringly tantalising.
