Janice Graham Band – ticket competition
Janice Graham Band
”ËIt’s Not Me’ Album Launch
The Ritz, Manchester
Friday 3rd February 2012
We are delighted to offer one lucky winner two tickets to see the Janice Graham Band at their rather special album launch gig…
We’ve featured Janice Graham Band a number of times here on Louder Than War since we started, and were pleased to announce the bands debut ‘concept’ album ”ËIt’s Not Me’ will be released on the legendary Acid Jazz Records in late February – however you can pre-order the album now.
The band are a true ‘garage band’ forming and playing their first gigs in a south Manchester garage in October 2008 (the drummer and bass player/singer had never even played their instruments before). The band have been gaining fans and glowing live reviews ever since.
Debut singer ”ËMurder’ despite its title and subject matter, received playlist status on XFM, NME Radio, Q Radio, Kerrrang Radio and glowing reviews from the likes of The Times, who said:
ESSENTIAL TRACKS ”â Shades of the Arctic Monkeys lyrical chutzpah and The Specials at their lairiest. Thai brides, illegitimate kids, arson and brass fanfares ”â It’s got the lot!
RECORD COLLECTOR – Snotty as a used hanky and all the better for it. Future stars: This is musical murder indeed.
We caught up with singer/bassist Joe Jones earlier this year, talking about single ”ËMurder’:
“Yes the lyrics are relatively brutal, but this song is not there to make you feel at ease. It is a song written with a bigger idea in mind. It is a part of an album that pulls no punches lyrically or musically. The album follows the life of a central character, who is struggling to keep his head above the waters of sanity, who is struggling to keep his life within the constraints of an ideal England.
I didn’t have the internet until the age of 17, so I still found music the old fashioned way, with records and especially those of my parents. I’m afraid of claiming influences as it pushes the individuals within a group. Around my house, there was no concert hall. The music source was the record collection of my father. His references to him are Iggy Pop, T-Rex, Bowie, Velvets, Soul. There was enough material to learn and dream”Â
The bands debut album ‘It’s Not Me’ is a bold move in these track by track iTunes times – it’s a fully fledged ‘concept’ album. It’s a self produced concept album with none of the big budgets of say ‘Tommy’, musically it plays out like a soundtrack or film score, but it tells a story. It is a film on vinyl, a naughties street punk musical. It’s like the Seventh Seal / Mean Streets / Midnight Express / Christiane F, but put through a Tarantino blender!
The band have been announced as ”ËHMV’s Next Big Thing’ and will also have copies of the album for sale at The Ritz show, nearly a month before the official release date.
Tickets are selling fast… so if you don’t get one then answer this question to be in with the chance of winning a pair of them.
