Doc and the Headshrinkers – If there wasn’t any sinners then the saints wouldn’t look so good
Out 21st July 2017
Louder than War’s Ioan Humphreys delves into the currently un-mined seam of rockabilly coming out of West Wales.
Doc Headshrinker aka Dave Cutter cut his teeth in various bands and has previously home recorded and self released an album called Died Jogging that received significant airplay around the world. After moving to Wales, he hooked up with Richie Evans, aka Megabass, who has been a member of various rockabilly and psychobilly outfits for the last decade. Richie’s current step-child is an indescribable outfit called Monsterometer who cheerfully defy all genre descriptions and plug their own spastic take on psychobilly shock punk. More of these to come…
Taking on drummer John Lovell cemented the three piece Headshrinker outfit we see today. And what an outfit. Badly tailored, ill fitting, bucking all current trends, but cool as fuck. Doc and the Headshrinkers are here, and they are definitely after your mothers, daughters, and aunties…
The track opens with an infectious as fuck guitar riff replete with ‘heys’ to punch the air with. A great high in the mix drum sound propels the track along with the thick double bass action forever in the background.
As the verse comes in and the refrain of “mamaaaaa I got news for you”, you get the feeling that the vocals have been dragged through a muddy bog filled with barbed wire and brambles. Doc’s delivery is not for the faint hearted.
The fast chorus, measured verse structure works perfectly with Doc’s guitar gymnastics, John’s steady beats and Richie’s sultry bass.
The accompanying video is a mock-up of a gig with an old teddy boy right at the front drinking and passing quiet judgement on the scene before him. Behind, the crowd are going crazy, but all we long for is his acceptance, which they eventually get. The imposing figure of Doc and the bass straddling antics of Richie make this band just ooze cool. They look like they mean business and I personally would not want to mess with them. Or their fans!
Rockabilly and psychobilly is alive and well in West Wales and it’s so much better for it. Check these out.
