Deep Purple’s Jon Lord dies age 71

Jon Lord, the one-time keyboard player with Deep Purple, has died aged 71.

Lord co-founded Deep Purple in 1968 and co-wrote many of the group’s songs including the legendary ‘Smoke On The Water’ He later played for Whitesnake.

Lord had been receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer since summer 2011. He died at the London Clinic earlier today (Mon 16th July 2012), his family present at his side – a statement said. “Jon passes from Darkness to Light”

Tributes from fellow musicians have followed – Ex-Rage Against the Machine star Tom Morello wrote on Twitter: “RIP the great Jon Lord, Deep Purple’s cornerstone/keyboardist. So many great great songs and that incredible SOUND of his! Thankyou.”

  1. Maybe not the coolest of bands but they did some really good stuff did Purple. Great keyboard sound too, very distinctive. RIP
