Punk rock pre-show for Glasgow Damned fans.  Joe Whyte tells the story…

There are not many things for free in this world these days, but local heroes Fire Exit and a cast of several are bucking the trend this coming Sunday. That’s the 28th of January, folks. The Damned are in town touring their forthcoming new album, Evil Spirits,  at The O2 Academy and a stellar cast of locals have come together to put on a pre-show at Audio which is an up-close-and personal dive of a venue (in the best possible sense of course!) and within staggering distance of The Academy for some Damned-style frolics later on.

I could get into a lengthy diatribe about the recent furore about the promoter selling Damned tickets on Groupon for a considerably lower price but this has been well covered by my good pal Alex Main in his blog, Reservoir Droogs, so I wont.

Read about that, here

Anyway, to matters in hand. Heres a quick run-down on who is playing.

Fire Exit should be well enough known to anyone of a punk rock persuasion. They’ve basically been plowing a lone furrow since their inception back in 77 and have endured the bad times and the good and it’s lovely to see them now regarded as elder statesmen of the Scottish scene. They are Rebellion Festival regulars and are never less than totally entertaining. They’ve just been celebrating their 40th anniversary with a compilation of long-lost tracks and also have a splendid live album out which was recorded at Wild At Heart in Berlin. Miss them at your peril. A Fire Exit show is always unforgettable.    Facebook

The Red Eyes are also on the bill. The band released a career-defining fourth album last year which made my top five for 2017 in Vive Le Rock magazine. They don’t play very often so this is a rare chance to see them in action. Alan Bishop and chums are one of the best bands in Scotland at the moment and should not be missed.    Facebook

The Media Whores were last year on the Mercury Music prize long-list for their recent release, Dangerous Minds which received outstanding reviews across the mainstream as well as punk rock media. I would have loved to have seen them on the podium receiving the award but unfortunately it was not to be. It just shows you, bands from the punk scene don’t have to be under the radar and part of some underground ghetto. The Media Whores have important things to say and they’d much rather the wider public heard them.     Facebook

The Threats are an Edinburgh band who also existed back in the late seventies. They had a couple of releases on Playlist Records and actually shared a single with your esteemed scribe’s school band (“Backlash” EP for those of you of a Discogs persuasion!).  Again, they play very rarely and I’d be making sure I didn’t miss them if I were you…   Facebook

Shock And Awe are another band from the capital who play a blistering brand of NYC-style punk. Fronted by the irrepressible Murray Ramone, their no-holds-barred old school rockin’ is always a joy to behold. Facebook
