The Norwegian foreign ministry has been training aspiring diplomats in Black metal or as they term it, “TNBM ”’ True Norwegian Black Metal”. This happened after foreign service missions reported a rise in enquiries about the musical genre from around the world.

From it’s rather dark roots the form has slowly turned respectable and is arguably the soundtrack to modern Norway with it’s melancholic feel and harking back to pre Christian roots. Indeed, the popularity and scale of the black metal phenomenon were demonstrated recently as one of the style’s foremost proponents, Dimmu Borgir, took the stage in Oslo with an orchestra and choir in a collaboration that has gained widespread media attention.

Norway has become world famous for the music and it’s many variations from Wardruna‘s brilliant Viking music take on the form with an album about Rune’s and various bands messing with electronics show a vibrant and fast moving scene.

The head of the foreign ministry’s centre of excellence, Kjersti Sommerset, told newspaper Dagens Nƒ¦ringsliv that “we now have 106 foreign service missions and they get many enquiries from people who want information about Norwegian black metal as a phenomenon. In the training program, we have a large cultural program in order to give the trainees a good understanding of Norwegian culture and the cultural industry. Black metal is clearly a part of this, ”ËœGlobal awakening’.

Whether this is black metal becoming an acknowledged artfrom or a hip government is difficult to tell.

A Plea From Louder Than War

Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.

To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
