Bleek Noir: Fresh Born Animal – EP review
FRESH BORN ANIMAL (And I’m Not Sure Who I Am)
Christopher Fox emerges from the ashes of Kindest Of Thieves with his new project, Bleek Noir. One he describes as being “scraped from the cheap hotel bed shared by illness, disillusionment and a brief lack of purpose.”
The new material is unmistakably Chris Fox, hitting the ground running with two releases: A double A-Side single Harder Love/Draggin’ That Damn Thing Around and a four track EP, Fresh Born Animal (And I’m Not Sure Who I Am).
All encased in a sound that Dylan might have imagined as ‘thin wild mercury music’ (but less thin – more coagulated), it might possibly include echoes of rockabilly, surf, early roots and jazz music and even tones of goth, while itself, being possibly all or none of the above.
At the centre is the distinctive melodramatic Fox vocal that owes more than a little to one of his heroes, a certain Steven Morrissey; crooning and wavering over hauntingly moody guitars and warm moog synth bass. A typically lo-fi and roomy production, he addresses lyrical explorations of the human condition, love and masochism. No surprise there. An advocate of the darker and more lugubrious aspects of life there’s a rich vein of unsmiling vaudevillan splendour amongst the musical acrobatics.
The single Harder Love leads an eccentric cha-cha tango while the sparse arrangement of Irene (And My Body Wants Out) includes the wonderful call to “fetch me your best tureen.” Add a gothic bleak noir-ness with the reflective critique in You’d be So Ashamed Of Me and in the guise of Bleek Noir, Chris Fox continues his evolution as an alternative and unique presence.
Leaving the final words to his own self analysis, he marks the BN alter ego as “a prolific, lyrical and distinctive creature, born from the wild copulation of whatever the mind spits on the page, a sound hog-tied to no time frame.”
